Air Fryer tortilla chips

These are Mexican-approved. Air fryer (affiliate link) tortilla chips are a healthier alternative to traditional fried chips. They are made by spraying a thin layer of oil on the tortilla chips and then air frying them. This results in a crispy and tasty chip lower in fat and calories.

Why I love this recipe

Tortilla chips are one of the most popular snacks in America. They are made from corn tortillas that are cut into small pieces and then fried. Tortilla chips are usually served with salsa, guacamole, or cheese dip.

I also use tortilla chips to make nachos, chilaquiles, and top soups, like my sopa de milpa or the vegan authentic tortilla soup.

This is a low-calorie corn tortilla chip, but equally delicious.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Tortilla chips

  • Vegetable oil. I like spray avocado oil, but all vegetable oils work here. Olive oil, safflower oil. I wouldn’t recommend using coconut oil, though, as it will change the taste.
  • Which corn tortillas are the best? Any corn tortilla works here as long as it is fresh and pliable.
  • Salt. I like to use kosher salt or sea salt.

Corn tortilla ingredients. Don’t forget to choose the best corn tortillas you can find and read the labels; some may contain additional fats, dough conditioners, or other ingredients.

Tortillas should only have masa harina (affiliate link), water, and a trace of lime.

How to make tortilla chips in the air fryer?

  1. Cut your tortillas in eighths.
  2. Lightly spray the tortilla pieces with oil on both sides and season with salt.
  3. Air fry at 400ºF for 5 minutes; shake the basket or baking sheet. Turn with kitchen tongs The pieces that need to be turned.
  4. Air Fry for 3 more minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use flour tortillas? Yes, flour tortillas work, but corn tortillas are the way we Mexicans go.

What can I use instead of cooking spray? A pastry brush would work great here. If you are brushing the oil to the corn tortilla, oil first and then cut. It will be easier.

How can I store them? After they have cooled down, store them in an airtight container in a dark, cool place.

How long will they last? They last up to 3 days in the pantry. But they are so easy to make that I recommend making them every time you crave some chips and salsa.

Can I upgrade the flavor? Sprinkle ground chile or a Mexican seasoning mix.
